This edition is the first to utilize comprehensive knowledge and analysis of the manuscript tradition up to the fourteenth century, incorporating detailed collations of forty manuscripts—fourteen more than the previous editor, D. L. Page, had access to. Despite pervasive contamination in the tradition, it has been possible to categorize the manuscripts into families and clarify the contributions of Byzantine scholars. The textual criticism contributions since the early humanists have been meticulously evaluated, revealing many misattributions, particularly regarding Auratus, whose reputation was overstated at the expense of the lesser-known Franciscus Portus. A significant correction from the nineteenth century has been resurrected, perfecting the ending of one of Aeschylus' renowned odes in praise of Zeus. Numerous other passages also benefit from the editor's careful reassessment. The critical apparatus indicates the publication place of each conjecture whenever possible. The extensive Praefatio includes an overview of the manuscripts and sources, a compendium of Aeschylean morphology and prosody, and a detailed discussion on orthographical issues. The text and apparatus are supplemented by a citations register and followed by metrical analyses of the lyric sections.
