This first volume of the Young Cities Research Paper series presents the scientific results of the Iranian-German research project focused on energy-efficient urban development in the Tehran-Karaj region. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the project involves key Iranian partners, including the Building and Housing Research Center and the New Towns Development Corporation, both affiliated with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The series aims to disseminate findings from the project, with this volume marking the completion of the Pilot Project in Hashtgerd New Town, located 70 km west of Tehran. Hashtgerd serves as the testing ground for innovative solutions in sustainable urban design, infrastructure, and planning, which are intended to be transferable to other areas in Iran and the broader MENA region. The Young Cities initiative is part of a global network of ten research projects funded by the German government, addressing energy-efficient urban development in future megacities across various countries. The collaboration between TU Berlin and Iranian partners has fostered intensive cooperation.
