Hugh MacColl

Hugh MacColl, a Scottish mathematician and logician, made significant contributions to the field of logic during the 19th century, particularly through his innovative approach to logical pluralism. He emphasized propositional interpretation over class interpretation, coining the term "pure logic." His 1906 work, Symbolic Logic and its Applications, presents a comprehensive view of his logic, categorizing propositions in various ways. Despite his groundbreaking ideas, such as modal logic and probability logic, MacColl's work has often been overlooked or misattributed. This volume reprints his key writings on logic.
