Exploring leadership dynamics in the Pauline church, this study examines contrasting interpretations of Paul's authority. It highlights the debate between egalitarian views, which see the church as countercultural, and authoritarian perspectives that align Paul with Greco-Roman norms. Utilizing social-science criticism, the author analyzes ancient patronage and power dynamics, particularly in 1 Corinthians. The findings reveal that Paul reinforces traditional hierarchies in his apostolic role while challenging them in the context of the Corinthian assembly's relationships.
