The River Road

Set in the summer of 1963 in Mercedes, Texas, the story follows Alton Baker, a bright and sociable high school sophomore. When his father takes a job in Brownsville with a lengthy daily commute, Alton seizes the opportunity to change schools. This new arrangement not only challenges Alton academically but also strengthens the bond between father and son as they navigate their daily journeys together, highlighting themes of family connection and personal growth amidst a backdrop of societal tensions.
