His education at Cambridge led him to ordination in 1864, where he met and married Grace Taylor, with whom he had 15 children. After inheriting family estates, he wrote numerous novels and studies on folklore, notably "The Book of Were-Wolves" and "Curious Myths of the Middle Ages."
