Focusing on the socio-economic history of medical practice in England, this study examines the evolution of doctors' livelihoods from the establishment of the first voluntary hospital in 1720 to the introduction of national health insurance in 1911. It highlights the experiences of ordinary doctors in provincial settings, their efforts to meet patient demand, and the challenges they faced from competition. By utilizing new archival sources, the author reveals how doctors adapted their practices and how their entrepreneurial spirit influenced the development of both general and specialist healthcare.
