Rhetoric and Philosophy in Renaissance Humanism

Focusing on the interplay between rhetoric and philosophy, this study analyzes four key Renaissance humanists: Petrarch, Salutati, Bruni, and Valla, emphasizing their commitment as professional rhetoricians. Professor Seigel challenges established views on humanism, particularly those of Hans Baron and Lauro Martines, while building on Paul Oskar Kristeller's insights. The work critically examines the broader historical context of Renaissance culture, presenting a thought-provoking discourse that highlights both the accomplishments and limitations of the humanists.
