The history of Bingham Canyon is intricately tied to its railroads and mining operations, beginning with gold and silver mining in the 1870s. By the late 1890s, copper mining surged, making it the largest mining district in the western U.S., contributing a significant portion of the nation’s copper. Although the last ore train ran in 2001 and tracks have been removed, the mine continues to thrive, supplying 25% of the nation's copper production.
