Hard, Hard Religion

Focusing on the intersection of faith and socioeconomic class, this study delves into how early twentieth-century folk religion provided a platform for the South's impoverished communities, both white and black, to connect and share their Christian experiences amid adversity. It highlights the emergence of a unique folk Christianity that emerged from the margins of capitalist society, expressed through poignant songs, mystical conversion stories, and grassroots rituals. This movement emphasized finding the sacred within everyday struggles, affirming the significance of life in a challenging world.
