This book is a love story on many levels; the love of a student for his teacher, of a teacher for his students, the first loves of friends found and lost, the love of newlyweds and its development over the years, the love of the child and the parent for each other, the ties that connect a family over a century and a half. It is about the events of a family's life sometimes sinister and tragic, sometimes magical and supernatural, that relate to the life of the author, supported by pictures that span three generations of family life. It is a story that depicts the author's love of his home area of sixty years, so strongly influenced by the Avon River, the Minas Basin and the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Inspired first by the many stories told to him by his parents, siblings and other relatives and eventually by a sense of responsibility to his family to ensure that so much family lore would not be lost forever, the author has been obsessed with the compulsion to write this book. The writing of this book has produced many serendipitous moments for the author, ranging from the discovery of family information previously unknown, meeting more family members and gaining a sense of connection to family members long gone and unknown to a sense of self-discovery and understanding.
