In 1917, Alan Leo, a renowned figure in astrology, faced legal trouble for fortune-telling, which was illegal at the time. Although he had previously been acquitted of similar charges in 1914, this time he was fined. With little hope for a successful appeal, Leo paid the fine and sought rest in Cornwall, where he unexpectedly died from a cerebral hemorrhage on August 30, 1917, at age 57. Friends attributed his death to the stress of the court case. At the time, he was working on a Dictionary, with installments published in his magazine, Modern Astrology, until the article "Horoscope." The project had been long in development, as indicated by an earlier article on Hindu Astrology, which Leo had likely acquired. After Leo's death, Vivian Robson became the editor of Modern Astrology alongside Bessie Leo, his widow. While compiling his own astrological dictionary, Robson discovered Leo's incomplete work and, with Bessie's encouragement, decided to finish it. This effort culminated in the publication of Leo's final book in 1929. Despite a subsequent falling out between Bessie and Robson, the book remains a significant resource. Like its predecessor, James Wilson's 1819 Dictionary, it features extensive entries, including on Horary Astrology. To aid readers, the current publishers, Astro-America, have added headings and an index. Alan Leo's Dictionary of Astrology is now available again, offering a wealth of knowledge.
