The efficient use of vector computers with emphasis on computational fluid dynamics

Mehr zum Buch

The GAMM Committee for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics organizes workshops to unite experts in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for idea exchange and accelerated development. A workshop focused on solving CFD problems on vector computers was proposed, leading to an event titled "The efficient use of vector computers with emphasis on computational fluid dynamics," held at the University of Karlsruhe from March 13-15, 1985. Attendance was limited to 22 participants from 7 countries, with 18 papers presented. The workshop announcement highlighted the role of fluid mechanics in advancing superfast vector computers like CRAY and CYBER 205, which in turn drive the creation of new algorithms that enhance vectorization. However, challenges arise with 3-D problems, as current vector computers face limitations. For instance, solving a system of 6 partial differential equations on a 50x50x50 grid results in 750,000 unknowns and approximately 60 million nonzero coefficients in a highly sparse matrix using a 4th order difference method. These complex issues were central to the discussions at the workshop.
