Um die Kinder seines Freundes Dekan Liddell zu erfreuen, dachte sich Lewis Carroll bei einer Kahnfahrt mit den drei Mädchen die Abenteuer der Alice im Wunderland aus. Die Erstausgabe von Alices Adventures in Wonderland erschien 1865. Zwanzig Jahre später fasste Carroll den Entschluss, Alices Adventures in Wonderland für kleinere Kinder zu kürzen und zu bearbeiten. Es dauerte allerdings noch eine Weile, bis Carroll Zeit fand, das Manuskript fertigzustellen. 1890 war es dann soweit, und die erste Auflage der Nursery Alice mit den Illustrationen von John Tenniel erschien.
