William Crookes (1832-1919) war ein außerordentlich bedeutender Phyiker, Chemiker und darüber hinaus auch Wissenschaftsjournalist. Schon im Alter von 18 Jahren arbeitete Crookes als Assistent am „Royal College of Chemistry“ in London. 1859 gründete Crookes die Zeitschrift „Chemical News“ und zwei Jahre später entdeckte er das Element Thalium, dessen Atomgewicht er zwölf Jahre später auch ermitteln konnte. Außerdem beschäftigte Crookes sich mit dem Zusammenhang zwischen Gas und Elektrizität und entdeckte hierbei einen dunklen Bereich um die Kathode („Crookescher Dunkelraum“). Er bewies weiterhin, dass auf eine Oberfläche auftreffende Kathodenstrahlen Wärme und Licht erzeugen. Trotz einiger Fehler in seinen theoretischen Erklärungen wird Crookes daher als „Entdecker des Plasmas“ angesehen. Aufgrund seiner zahlreichen Entdeckungen und Forschungen wurde Crookes 1863 in die „Royal Society“ berufen, 1897 zum Ritter geschlagen und bekam 1910 den „Order of Merit“. Der Wissenschaftler beschäftigte sich auch mit übernatürlichen Dingen und mit Medien. Er war Mitglied der Theosophischen Gesellschaft, einer zur damaligen Zeit sehr populären esoterischen Organisation.
