Niniejsze szkice podejmują problematykę splotu językoznawstwa i filozofii języka, ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na dokonania generatywizmu w językoznawstwie (w duchu Noama Chomsky’ego i Raya Jackendoffa) oraz analitycznej filozofii języka (nawiązującej do tradycji sięgającej Gottloba Fregego, Ludwiga Wittgensteina i Bertranda Russella). Pierwszy rozdział przywołuje trylemat Gorgiasza i wskazuje na jego konsekwencje dla typologii nauk oraz dla zrozumienia uniwersalności języka. Po omówieniu zagadnienia postępu w filozofii, w drugim rozdziale przedstawione zostaje pojęcie paradygmatu i jego użyteczność w naukach humanistycznych i społecznych, a przede wszystkim w językoznawstwie. Paradygmat jest tu postrzegany jako sposób porządkowania i opisywania świata. Kolejne rozdziały poświęcone są paradygmatom językoznawstwa generatywnego (zwłaszcza przejściu od paradygmatu formalnego do mentalistycznego), podstawowym pojęciom z zakresu filozofii języka i językoznawstwa, a także rozwojowi współczesnej pragmatyki. Dalsze rozdziały proponują rozszerzenie semantyki pojęciowej o element pragmatyczny, a także elementarną semantykę kategorialną dla predykacji. Pracę zamykają uwagi na temat rozszerzenia pola badań w kognitywno-analitycznej tradycji filozofii nowożytnej. Jednym z celów książki jest historiograficzny i porządkujący przegląd wybranych idei i teorii, co pociąga za sobą obfitość cytatów i omówień literatury źródłowej, a także obszerna końcowa bibliografia (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem istotnych, a nierzadko wymagających przypomnienia, pozycji w języku polskim). The book provides philosophical interpretations of pragmatic issues. It concentrates on well-established concepts such as presupposition, entailment, implicature, speech acts, subsentential speech acts, different cases of meaning as use, expressive meanings and expressive commitments, as well as the relation between knowledge and belief. The discussion goes beyond linguistic investigations and offers a wide philosophical perspective.

This book investigates possible common objects of inquiry in philosophy of language and literature.
