Jedná se o krizi účelu. Původní pocit účelu, který chlapci měli - být válečníkem, leaderem nebo výlučným živitelem rodiny - se pomalu vytrácí. Řada bystrých chlapců se tak potýká s "absencí účelu", cítí se odcizení, izolovaní a propadají okamžitému potěšení.
