Opičí král byl před půl stoletím ztvárněn českým umělcem Zdeňkem Sklenářem, jehož ilustrace vznikaly od konce padesátých do počátku šedesátých let. Kniha obsahuje osmdesát černobílých ilustrací na začátku a na konci každé kapitoly a dvacet čtyři celostránkových barevných ilustrací.
