Hlavní hrdinkou tohoto působivého, částečně historického románu je mladá židovská žena, specialistka na Bibli, která se vrací ke kořenům čtyř generací svého rodu a odkrývá tajemství obklopující jeden drahocenný, starodávný rukopis. Románový příběh nás seznamuje se životem praděda Sefera a jeho cestou do neznámých krajin, kde hledal ztracené izraelské kmeny. Za více než sto let se v Seferově domě, který čeká na demolici, najde na zaprášené půdě starobylý kodex - velmi raná kopie pěti Mojžíšových knih. Šula se vrací do domu, kde strávila velkou část dětství a kde zbývající členové rodiny přežívají ve zmatcích a chaosu.
