Joanna Cole war eine Autorin von Kinderbüchern und eine Wissenschaftslehrerin. Sie ist am bekanntesten als Autorin der Kinderbuchreihe „The Magic School Bus“. Ihr Werk umfasst über 250 Bücher, von ihrem ersten Buch „Cockroach“ bis zur berühmten Reihe „Magic School Bus“. Cole wurde in Newark, New Jersey, geboren und wuchs im nahegelegenen East Orange auf. Als Kind liebte sie Wissenschaft und hatte eine Lehrerin, die sie an Ms. Frizzle erinnerte. Sie absolvierte das City College of New York mit einem Bachelor-Abschluss in Psychologie. Nach ihrem Studium arbeitete sie ein Jahr lang als Bibliothekarin an einer Grundschule in Brooklyn.
