In „Lebensbilder“ beschreibt der Pionier der Graphic Novel Will Eisner sich und seine Wurzeln, und selbstverständlich tut er auch das in Bildern. Aber nicht chronologisch, sondern so wie er selbst sein Leben aufgearbeitet hat. Er beginnt gemütlich im Ruhestand in Florida. „Der Träumer“, in dem auch Jack Kirby und Bob Kane auftauchen, beschreibt ihn am Beginn seiner Karriere. Seine Situation als jüdischer Amerikaner im Zweiten Weltkrieg zieht uns ins „Herz des Sturms“, und mit „Name of the Game“ geht er zurück bis zu den Wurzeln jüdischer Kultur in Amerika.

Will Eisner gilt als der Erfinder der Graphic Novel, des anspruchsvollen graphischen Literaturromans. Die Kurzgeschichtensammlung umfasst drei große Abschnitte, die titelgebende Geschichte „Ein Vertrag mit Gott“, bestehend aus vier Kurzgeschichten, sowie „Lebenskraft“ und „Dropsie Avenue“, beide ebenfalls aus mehreren Episoden bestehend.

Er ist der wichtigste Zeichner des amerikanischen Comics: Will Eisner, der Mann, der mit kaum zwanzig schon ein eigenes Atelier hatte und 1940 für die Zeitungsbeilagen den geheimnisvollen Detektiv „The Spirit“ erfand, und der Mann, der drei Jahrzehnte später mit seinen Comic-Romanen eine ganz neue Form einführte.
