The King of Cats – als König der Katzen stellte sich der junge Balthus (1908–2001) in seinem Selbstportrait aus dem Jahr 1935 dar. Die Geschichte der streunenden Katze Mitsou hatte schon der Elfjährige in 40 Federzeichnungen erzählt, und Katzen – sein Alter ego? – finden sich immer wieder in den Bildern, für die er berühmt werden sollte: Junge Mädchen an der Schwelle zur Pubertät, traumwandelnd zwischen Unschuld und erotischen Phantasien, sind das große Thema, das Balthus zeit seines Lebens fast obsessiv beschäftigte, mit dem er sich schon früh den Zorn von Kritikern und Moralisten zuzog und letztlich in die Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts einschrieb. Anhand von 35 Gemälden aus seiner besten Zeit zwischen 1935 und den 50er Jahren geht Sabine Rewald, Kuratorin am New Yorker Metropolitan Museum of Art und Balthus-Spezialistin, erstmals diesem Thema nach. Parallelen zu Lewis Carroll, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Mann, Jean Cocteau und Vladimir Nabokov werden aufgezeigt, die Balthus’ Faszination für die ambivalenten bis dunklen Seiten der Kindheit im historischen und literarischen Kontext erhellen. Außerdem machte die Autorin noch lebende Modelle von Balthus’ Mädchen-Bildern ausfindig und erfuhr so aufschlussreiche Details zu den Sitzungen. Unser Band ist die deutschsprachige Ausgabe des Katalogs, der die Ausstellung „Balthus: Cats and Girls“ im Metropolitan Museum (ab September 2013) begleitet.

In December 1950, the German Expressionist Max Beckmann set out from his Manhattan apartment to see his Self-Portrait in Blue Jacket, on view at The Met, when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Inspired by the poignant circumstances of the artist’s death, Max Beckmann in New York focuses on 40 beautifully illustrated works that Beckmann painted in the city during the last 16 months of his life, as well as earlier works in New York collections. An informative and accessible essay by art historian Sabine Rewald, as well as detailed catalogue entries for each work and generous excerpts from the artist’s letters, diaries, and ephemera, illuminate Beckmann’s difficult and tumultuous life and make this an essential volume for anyone interested in the artist.

Publisher, poet, and aesthete, Scofield Thayer (1889–1982) led an intense public life that included the editorship of the prominent avant-garde journal the Dial and often contentious friendships with literary luminaries such as T. S. Eliot and E. E. Cummings. In the early 1920s, Thayer went to Vienna, where he was analyzed by Sigmund Freud. He also embarked on an art-buying spree throughout the capitals of Europe, acquiring (among many other things) a number of highly erotic works on paper by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Pablo Picasso. Though these artists were little known or appreciated in America at the time, and though the especially provocative nature of the drawings and watercolors put them outside the mainstream, these works have now taken their place as erotic masterpieces, collected with remarkable foresight and vision.
