Wieder einmal ist der Kinkstah ganz allein auf der Welt und bemitleidet sich. Alle Irregulars haben die Stadt verlassen, also muß Kinky Friedman die Unwägbarkeiten des Lebens mit seiner Katze diskutieren. Kinkys morbide Zerknirschung wird durch einen Anruf von Will Hoover unterbrochen, der sich als Journalist in Honolulu aufhält. Kinkys Freund Mike McGovern, der gerade auf Hawaii an einem Buch arbeitet, ist verschwunden. Zunächst ist Kinky nicht sonderlich beunruhigt, denn er kennt McGoverns Neigung zu gelegentlichen Seitensprüngen, aber als er nach längerer Zeit nicht mehr auftaucht, macht sich Kinky mit seiner Angebeteten Stephanie Dupont auf den Flug nach Hawaii. Auch Steve Rambam kommt extra aus Israel angeflogen, um bei der verzwickten Suche zu helfen, die mitten in ein gefährliches Abenteuer führt, wo Kinkys Ermittlungsteam bis zum Schluß im Nebel alter Mythen, heiliger Kulte, Totems und Tabus herumstochert.
