Anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags von Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) legte der französische Photohistoriker Clément Chéroux 2008 im handlichen Taschenformat eine wissenschaftlich fundierte und reich bebilderte Biographie des Jahrhundertphotographen vor. Der kleine Band erwies sich als so erfolgreich, dass wir ihn in unserer Reihe 'Die kleine Enzyklopädie' jetzt als Neuauflage anbieten. Henri Cartier-Bresson, der aus einer wohlhabenden Pariser Industriellenfamilie stammte, studierte zunächst Malerei, bevor er im Kreis der Surrealisten Zaungast wurde, um dann bei Jean Renoir die Anfänge der Film- und Schauspielkunst zu erlernen. Bald jedoch entdeckte er die Photographie für sich. Dank einer deutschen Erfindung, der Kleinbildkamera von Leica, wurde sie seine lebenslange Leidenschaft. In seinen Händen entwickelte sich dieser Apparat zu einem magischen Instrument – Henri Cartier-Bresson, der 'Meister des entscheidenden Augenblicks', und die Leica-Photographie sollten gemeinsam die Lichtbildkunst des 20. Jahrhunderts revolutionieren.
