This review describes the knowledge to date in the use of antibodies and antibody-based derivatives for targeting effector molecules of cytotoxic drugs to selected cells in the body. Such target cells may be normal cells, cells infected with viruses, malignant cells or bacteria and parasites. Special emphasis is given to the antibody-dependent enzyme-mediated prodrug therapy (ADEPT), a recently developed biphasic antibody treatment modality.
