Between 1999 and 2011, David Goldblatt ventured into personal photography in color, a departure from his extensive use of color in professional work since 1964. With the new political landscape and advancements in digital reproduction, he felt it was the right time to explore this medium personally. Initially focusing on Johannesburg, he expanded his project to capture images within a 500-meter radius of 122 intersections defined by whole degrees of latitude and longitude across South Africa. However, after encountering unremarkable locations, he recognized the risk of adhering too rigidly to a formula. He abandoned the original project but retained the concept of intersections. Over nine years, he traveled the country seeking intersections of ideas, values, histories, conflicts, congruencies, fears, joys, and aspirations, often influenced by the land itself. This collection showcases Goldblatt’s color photography from 2002 to 2011. An earlier version, titled Intersections, was published in 2005, followed by Intersections Intersected, a catalogue featuring paired black and white and color photographs, released by Serralves Museum in 2008.
