Initiated by artist Ahmet Ö?üt in 2012, 'The Silent University' is an autonomous platform for academics unable to share their knowledge due to their residency status, unrecognized degrees, or other barriers to academia. It serves as a solidarity school for refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants who participate as lecturers, consultants, and researchers. This initiative proposes a new educational institution free from the constraints of traditional universities and bureaucratic migration laws, while also reflecting the structures of existing educational systems. This comprehensive publication introduces the Silent University and situates it within the broader contexts of radical pedagogy and socially engaged art. It highlights the diverse achievements, struggles, and failures of its branches in Amman, Athens, Hamburg, London, Mülheim/Ruhr, and Stockholm. The book connects this initiative to larger discussions on migration policies, critical pedagogy, and institutional engagement, aiming to inspire involvement from potential contributors, lecturers, and students. It addresses the urgent need for such initiatives in cities and countries worldwide. Published as part of the Impulse Theater Festival, this edition marks the foundation of Silent University Ruhr in Mülheim in June 2015.
