The history of Egyptology in Lower Saxony forms a microcosm within Lower Saxon and German history, in which the historical timelines of Hanover, Hildesheim, and Göttingen crossed each other again and again. The museums at Hanover and Hildesheim were owed to the wealthy Christian and Jewish bourgeoisie, the chair of Egyptology at Göttingen was the product of Prussian academic politics and confronted its first professor, Heinrich Brugsch from Berlin, with various provincial resentments. Later, famous scholars such as G. F. Grotefend, C. R. Lepsius, A. Kestner or W. Pelizaeus taught or studied there. The volume contains two forewords, twelve biographies, and a chronological table of 14 pages. The papers deal with the CVs of H. Brugsch [1827-94], R. Pietschmann [1851-1923], G. Seyffarth [1796-1885], M. Uhlemann [1829-62], P. de Lagarde [1827-91], K. H. Sethe [1869-1934], W. Spiegelberg [1870-1930, written by his own grandnephew], C. Küthmann [1885-1968], H. Kees [1886-1964], H. J. Polotsky [1905-91], S. H. Erdmann Schott [1897-1971], G. Roeder [1881-1966], and J. F. Blumenbach [1752-1840].
