In this study, diesel fuel, different surrogate fuels, oxygenated blends, and alkane fuels are investigated under engine-like conditions in an optically accessible high pressure and temperature spray combustion chamber. The investigated surrogate fuels are composed of n-decane and alphamethylnaphthalene in different compositions according to the reference cetane numbers (CN) 53, 45, 38, and 23. In addition to the two-component surrogate fuelmixtures, a three-componentmixture composed of n-decane, alpha-methylnaphthalene, and di-n-butyl ether with a reference cetane number of 53 is examined to highlight the influence of adding di-n-butyl ether (DNBE) to the surrogate fuel at a constant cetane number. Four oxygenated blends with DNBE contents of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 100% in EN590 diesel and corresponding cetane numbers of 53, 58, 62, and 100 are studied. Moreover, long chain structure alkane fuels such as heptane, decane, and dodecane are investigated for the confirmation of fuel volatility effect on spray atomization.
