Research on nonpharmacological treatments for anxiety disorders has been conducted for over three decades at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Key developments in the understanding of panic attacks and panic disorder (PD) during the 1980s and 1990s led to significant advancements in psychological treatments, particularly the creation of panic control treatment (PCT). A substantial body of evidence has emerged supporting the efficacy of PCT and similar interventions, establishing it as a first-line treatment in clinical guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). In 2013, PCT was recognized as an Evidence Based Program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in the U.S., and the Society of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association rated the evidence for PCT as "strong." Following initial strong evidence for PCT's efficacy, a guide outlining treatment procedures was developed, resulting in the creation of the Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Workbook and Therapist Guide, which have now been revised. The fifth edition of the client workbook is designed for direct use by clients, typically under professional supervision, but can also serve as a self-help resource for less severe cases.
