Set in colonial New Hampshire, the story follows Richard "Dick" Dudgeon, an outcast who returns home after his father's death, ready to confront his family's disdain. Despite being viewed as wicked by the local minister's wife, Dick receives unexpected kindness from the minister. The revelation of a changed will leaves Dick with the estate, leading him to evict his mother while offering refuge to his orphaned cousin.
