The book explores the impact of early home literacy experiences on Chinese children's literacy development and reading performance in school through two studies. The first study found that informal home literacy experiences were linked to oral vocabulary, while formal experiences influenced Chinese character recognition. The second study indicated that prior character recognition was a significant predictor of performance in Chinese lessons during the first two semesters, while oral vocabulary and the overall domain of home literacy experiences did not significantly predict lesson performance.
