Urban gardening and agriculture havebecome important elements of sustainable urban planning in the contextof persistent urbanization amid limited resources. However, aconsideration of the cultural-historical dimension has been lacking upto now. The editors present the first comprehensive outline oftraditional forms of food production in cities to help preserve thisvaluable knowledge. On the basis of current research findings, theydevelop new perspectives and guidelines for recognizing traditional foodproduction systems as an aspect of cultural heritage and for dealingwith urban agriculture worldwide.
