The Ramirez women of Staten Island are haunted by absence. Thirteen-year-old Ruthy vanished after track practice, leaving her family shattered. Twelve years later, oldest sister Jessica sees a woman on a reality show who resembles Ruthy, now calling herself Ruby. This prompts Jessica to inform her younger sister, Nina, igniting hope that Ruthy might still be alive. The years have been tough for the Ramirez family; their mother, Dolores, still grapples with the loss, Jessica balances a newborn with her hospital job, and Nina, after college, faces medical school rejections and works at a mall lingerie store. Inspired by the possible sighting of Ruthy, Jessica and Nina plan a road trip to the show's filming location, with Dolores insisting on joining them, along with her outspoken friend, Irene. Their journey becomes a reckoning, forcing the Ramirez women to confront their past and consider their future—whether or not Ruthy is part of it. This narrative is a vivid exploration of familial bonds, generational violence, colonialism, race, and silence, infused with snark, resentment, tenderness, and love.
