Book One in the Ann Perkins Detective Agency series. When Ernie Wright goes to rob a bank, he begins a chain of events leading to murder, mayhem, and mystery. The police seek the witness for a statement. The gang seek the witness to kill her. The witness, and Ernie, are both trying to stay alive. Amongst the chaos, Ann Perkins is also trying to stay alive. Some will live and some will die, but will the fake witness be one of the survivors. Ernie Wright had never robbed a bank or walked the streets of Manchester in a dress and high heels, but the death of his wife and current redundancy had changed him beyond all recognition and propelled him towards this morning’s action. From the disabled toilet, he made his way down the escalator taking the opportunity of looking over the heads of those on the ground floor and scanning the store for danger. The bottom step arrived whilst he was still looking around, and he almost fell as he staggered off. Walking in heels still required a concentration he momentarily lacked, but nobody seemed to have noticed and he made it to the door without further mishap. The spring morning sun had little warmth, and shoppers between him and the bank all wore coats. He stepped back into the shadow of the doorway and wrapped his arms around his body to fend off the breeze. Today, he told himself, was not the best day for a robbery.
