Miss Mary Sutherland, a woman with a substantial income, visits Sherlock Holmes to request his assistance regarding the mysterious disappearance of her fiancé, Hosmer Ander, from the carriage that was conveying him to their wedding
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are chatting on a cold spring morning after breakfast, and Holmes laments that criminals have lost their audacity and originality. He states, "As for my little consulting room, it seems to be degenerating into an agency for recovering lost pencils and giving advice to young ladies from boarding schools. I think I have finally hit rock bottom." Holmes shows Watson a letter from a Miss Hunter, in which she asks for advice on whether she should accept a job as a governess. Watson tries to console him by saying that things are often not what they seem, and at that moment, Miss Violet Hunter is announced. Against all odds, Holmes likes the young woman, as he detests pretense and appreciates clear and decisive people. He accepts the case, and thus begins The Mystery of Copper Beeches.
The Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein arrives a 221b in disguise, desperate for Holmes' help. He is engaged to marry a Scandinavian princess, but five years earlier, had a liaison with an American opera singer, Irene Adler. Adler has kept momentoes of their affair, which she is threatening to send to his intended bride
