For half a century, Sarah Josepha Hale was the most influential woman in America, serving as the editor of Godey's Lady's Book. She shaped cultural norms, guiding women and men on reading, cooking, behavior, and thought. Two decades before the Seneca Falls convention, Hale advocated for women's education, employment, and financial independence.
