In the wake of a devastating earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Andrew Furey, an orthopedic surgeon from St. John's, felt compelled to act after witnessing the immense suffering on his television. This moment ignited a familiar call for help that resonates deeply within the history of Newfoundland and Labrador. Teaming up with his wife, Dr. Allison Furey, and fellow orthopedic surgeon Will Moores, he traveled to Port-au-Prince to volunteer for a week amidst overwhelming challenges—countless injured victims, dire working conditions, and disorganized official responses. Despite these obstacles, the trio remained hopeful and committed. Upon returning home, Dr. Furey established Team Broken Earth, a nimble volunteer task force of medical professionals dedicated to providing aid in Haiti. The organization has since expanded, drawing volunteers from across Canada and undertaking numerous missions not only in Haiti but also in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. With a focus on education and training for local healthcare workers, Team Broken Earth has evolved its mission significantly.
