Each year, MPavilion emerges as a unique civic space for community engagement and sharing, supported by an independent cultural program featuring Australian and international artists, designers, and thinkers. It serves as an invitation for communication, collaboration, education, and creativity, described by Professor Alan Pert as a 'cultural laboratory'—an educational environment beyond traditional institutions. Focusing on six pavilion projects by architects Sean Godsell, Amanda Levete, Bijoy Jain, Rem Koolhaas & David Gianotten, Carme Pinos, and Glenn Murcutt, this work reflects on their architectural and cultural impact. It includes architectural drawings, models, design statements, and eight essays by leading design writers, alongside photographs documenting each project and its inspired activities. The book explores how each architect addresses contemporary design, architecture, and community building issues, positioning MPavilion as a global model for cultural activation, design leadership, place-making, and public/private partnerships. It serves as both an introduction to and a critical assessment of the MPavilion initiative, emphasizing that it is more than just a structure; it is a thriving community.
