A radical shift in the analysis of discourse anaphora is presented, moving from a pragmatic to a cognitive perspective focused on processing procedures. Referring expressions are identified as indicators of the Accessibility of antecedents in memory. This approach leads to new insights, including predictions about the distribution of referring expressions in discourse and the establishment of universals in anaphoric relations. Despite variations in languages, they adhere to a common Accessibility marking hierarchy.
