At the end of the 21st century, the Earth lay devastated. Industrial pollution, overpopulation and climate change had left large areas uninhabitable. Bitter wars were fought for control of scarce resources, destroying entire countries and killing most of the global population. To save the human race, the United Nations gathered the remaining people into Safehouses, giant domed refuges where everyone was placed into a state of suspended animation, watched over by groups of clones called Caretakers and computerized robots called Artificials. Now, humanity has been sleeping for three thousand years, waiting for the time when long slow natural processes have healed the planet, and people can at last emerge from their stasis ...

The War of 1812 has been mostly forgotten in the US. At the time, it was a war that many thought should not have been waged. It was, however, a major event: it precipitated the American invasion of Canada (and an attempted retaliatory invasion of America by Canada), it led to the capture and burning of the American capitol in Washington DC, and it marks the last time that foreign troops ever entered and fought inside the continental United States (though much of the fighting actually took place in Canada). Yet, it was also a war with an ambiguous end and no clear winner-and the United States of America does not like to celebrate or remember wars it did not win. Over the years, Lenny Flank has visited most of the battlefields and historical sites from the War of 1812, both in the US and in Canada. So at one level, this book is a sort of historical travelogue. But at another level, it is a plea to remember: to consider and preserve the places where history was made, in a war that is today mostly forgotten. Illustrated.

In May of 2015, Lenny Flank left his St Petersburg FL apartment, climbed into a campervan, and set out to live on the road. Over the next seven years, he toured most of the continental United States from coast to coast and from border to border. During this time, he journeyed the entire length of Interstate I-75, from Florida to Michigan and everywhere in between. This travelogue is a chronicle of that roadtrip. It reviews just some of the unusual and interesting places and attractions he was able to enjoy visiting, either on I-75 itself or on an easy day trip within a few hours of it, and describes some of their history-everything from national parks to historical sites to museums to odd little sites that only the locals know about. Among them are: Florida's Skunk Ape; a commune founded by a Hollow Earth cu

It How two Zoos are disputing the title of "America's First Zoo"; How a rare deer was saved from extinction by a Chinese Emperor's hunting preserve; How a Zoo in New York put a human on display in the Monkey House; How a rescued Dolphin in Florida came to be the star of two Hollywood movies; How a popular California Aquarium resulted from a failed attempt by Disney to open a new park; How a telegenic Director transformed a small Zoo in Ohio into one of the most famous in the country; How a rich beer baron's hobby became one of the most popular attractions in Florida; How a Texas Zoo was involved in the last train robbery in the US. Around the globe, invasive plants and animals have become a serious threat. Some 40% of all endangered species worldwide have been caused by the presence of exotic invasives, and introduced species are now the second-leading cause of extinctions, behind only habitat loss. In the United States, Florida's unique climate and its position as a center of the exotic-animal trade has made it particularly vulnerable to invasives. This book is an account of Florida's invaders, from the Burmese Python to the Lionfish to the Kudzu plant and many more, which are threatening the very ecology of the Sunshine State. Illustrated.
