Lewis Tappan

    Lewis Tappan war ein bedeutender Abolitionist, der sich intensiv für die Freiheit der illegal versklavten Afrikaner der Amistad einsetzte. Durch seine Bemühungen und die Sicherung hochwertiger Anwälte wurden diese Afrikaner nach einem Urteil des Obersten Gerichtshofs der Vereinigten Staaten freigelassen. Tappan trug auch zur Beschaffung von Spenden und zur Steigerung der öffentlichen Unterstützung bei. Nach dem Bürgerkrieg war er Mitbegründer der American Missionary Association, die zahlreiche Kirchen und Bildungseinrichtungen zur Unterstützung befreiter Sklaven gründete.
