Émile Zola (1840-1902) war ein französischer Schriftsteller und Journalist. Er gilt als einer der großen französischen Romanciers des 19. Jahrhunderts und als Leitfigur und Begründer der gesamteuropäischen literarischen Strömung des Naturalismus. Daneben betätigte er sich auf gemäßigt linker Position als Journalist. Sein Hauptwerk waren 20 Romane des Zyklusses mit dem Titel Les Rougon-Macquart. Histoire naturelle et sociale d'une famille sous le Second Empire/Die R.-M. Die Natur- und Sozialgeschichte einer Familie im Zweiten Kaiserreich. Als Familiengeschichte beschreibt die Romanreihe die Geschichte des der Bourgeoisie zuzuordnenden Rougon-Zweiges und des der Unterschicht angehörenden Macquart-Zweiges. Sowohl die Erbanlagen (Hang zum Alkoholismus), das Milieu (Unterschicht bzw. Boutgeoisie) und die historischen Umstände werden in dieser Romanreihe ausführlich behandelt. Die Romane sind insbesondere für Sozialhistoriker von hohem Interesse. Reproduktion des vierten Bandes der Rougon-Macquart mit Anpassungen an die neue Rechtschreibung.
