Un vieil écrivain, monsieur Waterman, vit à Québec dans une tour. Sa traductrice, la jeune Marine, est une Irlandaise aux cheveux roux et aux yeux verts ; elle habite un chalet à l'Île d'Orléans, parmi les chats, les ratons laveurs, les hérons bleus et les chevaux de course à la retraite.
