TV series have gained explosive cultural significance in recent years. They have long replaced film as the leading entertainment medium and as a means of social distinction. Literature, media, and communication studies have recognized this increase in importance and have developed television research as a new focus, particularly in the English-speaking world. This volume aims to contribute to connecting existing television research with the social sciences and to promote discussion in the German-speaking area. It takes an approach through a thematic limitation to address the social scientific component of the investigations. It focuses on the increasingly popular figures of zombies, vampires, aliens, ghosts, monsters, and other fantastic others. In particular, the engagement with fantastic others offers insights into social meanings and identities that, from a sociological perspective, always appear constructed. For in the reflection of the fantastic and the unreal, the self can be made evident in its constructedness.
