Set in Sussex in 1912, the story unfolds during a night steeped in superstition, where villagers believe they can see the ghosts of those destined to die in the coming year. Constantia Gifford, the 17-year-old daughter of a disgraced taxidermist, lives in a decaying house filled with remnants of her father's once-celebrated museum.
