Mehr zum Buch

Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930) is celebrated for her unique vision developed in Poland amid a repressive Communist regime. Having witnessed humanity's destructive tendencies, she creates art that candidly reflects the human condition. By the 1960s, she began to gain international recognition as a sculptor, particularly for her monumental environments known as Abakans. Continuously building on her independent vision, she crafted large groups of human figures from old burlap sacks and resin, including 80 backward-seated and 50 standing figures, which have sparked significant cultural and political dialogue. Her exhibition at the Venice Biennial in 1980 was a sensation, and her retrospective toured major American museums after being shown at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Abakanowicz has transformed sculpture from mere objects to immersive spaces. Her monumental works in bronze, stone, iron, and concrete are permanently installed in various locations, including Italy, South Korea, Israel, Lithuania, and Chicago. She innovatively uses the casting process to create individual bodies with personal expression, exemplified by her largest group of figures in Chicago, consisting of 106 headless shells in motion. Additionally, she has created multi-figurative compositions using welded stainless steel and tree trunks enhanced with metal.
