Three artists exemplify Expressionism: Edvard Munch as a pioneer, and Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner as leading figures. Their groundbreaking contributions shaped 20th-century art. Nolde joined the Brücke group in 1906, where Kirchner was a key member, but left after a few months. In 1907, Nolde met Munch in Berlin, whose work he admired. The Brücke artists were also captivated by Munch, attempting to involve him in collaborative projects. Their paths crossed again in 1912 at the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne, where Kirchner and Munch discussed their artistic perspectives. Although their personal connections remained distant, they monitored each other's artistic journeys—Kirchner with skepticism, Munch with respect. In conjunction with a major Munch exhibition at the Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf, Beck & Eggeling showcased watercolors, drawings, and prints by all three artists from October 9 to December 21, 2010. These works explore themes of individuality, relationships, and nature, reflecting inner emotions. The exhibition highlights formal and thematic parallels, showcasing how Munch's work paved the way for Nolde and Kirchner to explore their artistic freedoms independently.
