Set in 19th-century Brazil, the story revolves around themes of love and jealousy, exploring the complexities of human relationships through a darkly comic lens. The protagonist navigates the intricacies of his feelings towards his wife and the suspicion of infidelity, leading to a poignant examination of trust and betrayal. Machado de Assis masterfully blends tragedy and humor, making this novel a timeless reflection on the human condition and the emotional turmoil that jealousy can provoke.

The greatest brazilian mistery is inside this book. Talked about 'til this day in schools and SAT tests (in Brasil called ''Vestibular/Enem''), even though it was written 126 years ago. I like how Machado de Assis portrays the brazilian elite so cynically it's almost funny. I really liked how he described the characters and how their appearances can be deceiving if you don't, in a way, judge them. The use of religious morality is also very ingrained and used as a critique to the ''bourgeois style of life'' in 1899. One of those ''must reads'' of brazilian literature.
