Jack McEvoy, a crime reporter nearing the end of his career at the Los Angeles Times, is determined to leave with a bang by pursuing a Pulitzer Prize-winning story. With only days left on the job, he is tasked with training his replacement, but his focus shifts to Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer who has confessed to a brutal crime. Jack persuades Alonzo's mother to help him investigate her son's possible innocence, intending to highlight the societal issues that led to Alonzo's actions. However, as Jack digs deeper, he discovers that the confession is likely false, reigniting his pursuit of a major story reminiscent of his past encounters with a notorious killer known as The Poet. Teaming up with FBI Agent Rachel Walling, Jack sets out to track down a new killer who has evaded law enforcement's attention. Unbeknownst to Jack, his investigation has triggered a digital alert, and the killer is aware of Jack's pursuit, preparing for their inevitable confrontation.
